US President Donald Trump is imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on goods from India. Trump wrote in a presidential decree. The reason for the increased tariff is that India, according to Trump, "directly or indirectly imports Russian oil." In doing so, Trump has taken seriously the threats he has made against the country recently about additional sanctions for India's involvement in Russia.
The increased tariff rate will take effect in 21 days. The decree emphasizes, however, that if the political situation changes, the additional tariff can also be adjusted.
The tariff will be added to a separate tariff also of 25 percent, which Trump announced in a post on Truth Social at the end of July, and which will take effect as early as Thursday.
In the same post, Trump suggested that India would be imposed additional tough sanctions for purchasing Russian weapons and oil - although without specifying it further at the time.
According to the AFP news agency, today's additional tariff maintains several exceptions for goods that are subject to separate sector-specific tariffs such as steel and aluminum.
Condemnation from India
On Wednesday evening Danish time, India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the additional tariff in a written statement, calling the measure "unfair, unfounded and unreasonable". This is reported by the news agency AFP.
- Our imports are based on market conditions and are carried out with the overall goal of ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indians, the statement according to the news agency says.
- It is therefore extremely regrettable that the United States chooses to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries also take in their own national interest.
Peter Bay Kirkegaard, who is a senior consultant in the Confederation of Danish Industry's department for global trade, is positive about Trump's measures in a written comment to Ritzau.
- Fortunately, Trump is starting to turn up the pressure on Russia now by making it less attractive for other countries to buy Russian oil, he says and adds:
- Oil has been one of Putin's major sources of income in connection with the war against Ukraine, so hopefully the increased pressure can make him change his mind.
The announcement of the additional tariffs comes on the same day that US special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital, Moscow. The meeting comes two days before a deadline set by US President Donald Trump for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
