The Port of Skagen's new port office was inaugurated in the fall of 2023, and it is certainly a candidate for Denmark's most beautiful port office.

Expansion with care :
Peace of mind: The Port of Skagen works with economic common sense

Stability, long-termism and close relationships provide development opportunities in port operations at the top of Denmark, where the port's customers help ensure good finances with long-term contracts.

At a time when the two North Jutland ports of Hanstholm and Frederikshavn are in a situation with a debt of approximately 500 million and 1.5 billion DKK respectively, things look completely different in the Port of Skagen. Here, the port's users are part of the investments behind the port expansions.

- We have long-term contracts that are non-cancellable with our users. This provides robustness for the port and peace of mind for the board and myself, says port director Willy B. Hansen, who has led the port since 2003.

The good and long-term relationships have almost become a hallmark of the port, and this has already provided good development opportunities.

- We must continue to create growth. That's why we want the customers to have a hand on the stove, so that we can build and expand with peace of mind, he says, and explains further:

- We must continue to create growth. We must have liquidity to be able to do that.

The hand on the stove for the companies is very concrete for the port's customers.

- We ask for guarantees from the parent companies, says Willy B. Hansen.

It may sound harsh, but the result is actually completely different.

- In our way, there is a common belief that we will implement the plan together, he says, and elaborates:

- But it requires that you create relationships and mutual trust. It also requires that you drink more than a pot of coffee together. That has always been our approach.

There are even several positive side effects of that approach and the good long-term relationships.

- It is satisfying to see growth and development on several levels, and it makes it a little more fun to go to work every day, says Willy B. Hansen, who sits in the new port office, which could very well be a candidate for Denmark's absolute most beautiful port office.

The Thyborøn Port office is probably the closest you get to a similar building, I say.

- We actually visited Thyborøn before we built this, says Willy B. Hansen with a smile that shows that he is also proud of the port's new port office.

The port office was completed in the fall of 2023 at a cost of 44 million. kr.

The numbers speak for themselves

Working together with the port's long-term customers has also meant that there is financial stability and continued development that has followed. Specifically, this has meant that the port has not only undergone expansions. The profit has developed significantly.

- In 2012 we had a turnover of 27 million. kr. - in 2022 we had a turnover of 78 million. kr. And we ended up with a profit of approximately 27 million. kr., explains the port director and reveals a little about the 2023 financial year:

- We will surpass both.
