Esbjerg: They were all there: Developer, architects, contractors, craftsmen, material producers, politicians and the associations, when the judging committee from Årets Byggeri on Tuesday stopped by Maritimt Center to present the award "Arets Byggeri 2023" to Maritimt Center. This is what Esbjerg Municipality writes in a press release.

- It really is a big pat on the back to everyone who has helped make Maritimt Center a reality. Maritimt Center wins in an incredibly strong field in the open category, and that is why we can really be extra proud of this award, says Mayor Jesper Frost Rasmussen.

The judging committee behind the award, which consists of top managers from the construction industry's most important organizations and institutions, has emphasized several things in their justification for choosing Maritimt Center as the winner of this year's award:

The great focus on community in the house impresses the judges, and the judges' report states that Maritimt Center has created an impressive destination that promotes community and togetherness within maritime life. It provides space for water sports clubs, training facilities and social activities, which strengthens maritime association life and brings people together around their common passion.

Beautiful, open, bright and robust

The judges have also noticed the versatile use of the house, where there is space for everything from diving, kayaking and school activities. Just as the natural light and inclusive design have impressed in the same way as the robustness of the building: Maritimt Center is not only beautiful, but also practical and robust. It is designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and can accommodate high tides.

- Overall, Maritimt Center represents a perfect balance between functionality and community. It is a destination that not only meets maritime needs, but also creates an inclusive space for all visitors. That is why Maritimt Center wins the "Building of the Year" award for several convincing reasons, the judges say in the judges' report.

The kind words and the award also have great meaning for the architects from WERK, who drew the lines for Maritimt Center.

- It is with great joy and pride that we accept the award as Building of the Year. The recognition is evidence that the Maritime Center has succeeded in creating a new anchor point for the maritime association life in the city and a new architectural landmark on the Danish west coast – an inspiration for the outside world, says founder and creative director of WERK, Thomas Kock.

In addition to being named Building of the Year in Denmark, the Maritime Center has also just been awarded by Esbjerg City Foundation for the way the innovative and free architecture creates a welcoming and harmonious atmosphere. In addition, the house has also won both the IOC IPC IAKS Architecture Prize and the Danish Wood Award 2023 earlier this year.
