The Kassø PtX plant in Aabenraa has been the first in the world to be certified to produce e-methanol that meets the EU's new requirements for green fuels. This is stated by European Energy in a press release.

The certification has been granted through the ISCC EU scheme and confirms that the plant's production meets the EU definition of renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) according to the revised Renewable Energy Directive.

The ISCC EU certification includes independent verification that the production uses renewable electricity and biogenic CO2. The e-methanol from Kassø is thus approved for use in EU schemes such as FuelEU Maritime and ReFuelEU Aviation as well as national quota systems.

Kassø PtX has been developed by European Energy in collaboration with Mitsui & Co. and is, according to the companies, the first commercial e-methanol plant with an annual capacity of 42,000 tonnes. The plant will supply methanol to international customers.

- ISCC EU RFNBO certification is an important step in documenting the sustainable nature of our e-methanol and ensuring that it can contribute to climate action across Europe, says Rene Alcaraz Frederiksen, CEO of Solar Park Kassø.

The classification as e-methanol is based on documentation of the use of renewable electricity, biogenic CO2 and compliance with mass balance and traceability requirements. The certification makes it possible to include the fuel in the EU's renewable energy targets and use it in sectors such as shipping, aviation and industry.
