Minister of Industry and Commerce Morten Bødskov (S) held a meeting with representatives from the business community and the trade union movement on Tuesday following the latest US tariff threats.

- There is no doubt whatsoever that the US president's statements contribute to unpredictability, uncertainty and of course also insecurity for Danish business and Danish employees, says Morten Bødskov after the meeting.

If President Donald Trump were to take his threat of a ten percent tariff seriously due to the situation in Greenland, it would be felt in Denmark, says Bødskov.

- It is clear that it has consequences for our growth and our employment. We can see that it also had that in the spring. So statements like this and the consequences of that will of course be there, says the Minister of Industry and Commerce.

The ten percent tariff on goods from Denmark and seven other European countries will apply from February 1, Trump said on Saturday. From June 1, that number will increase to 25 percent if the countries do not act in accordance with his desire to take over Greenland.

- I understand that people are nervous. I understand that business leaders are uncertain, insecure and nervous. It is a world that is different and changed. Our task is to ensure that our companies and employees are kept on track, says Morten Bødskov.

Prime Minister expects robust European response

If the US starts a tariff war with Europe, there must be a robust European response. This is what Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) said on Tuesday. A tariff war between the US and Europe is far from Danish, European and Western interests, the Prime Minister first points out.

- I hope we avoid this move from the US, she says.

However, Europe and Denmark cannot stand idly by if the US president's threats of increased tariffs on Danish and European goods become reality.

- But it is clear that if the US imposes tariffs on Europe, Europe must of course respond to this - robustly. It is not a situation we want or have brought ourselves into, but of course we must be able to respond, says Mette Frederiksen.
