Future dilemma: Windturbines close to national park?

No one can doubt that it is some of Denmark's most beautiful nature that Naturpark Thy has to offer, stretching from Agger Tange all the way along the coast with large parts of the hinterland to Hanstholm. You would think that everything was joy and happiness for the nature park, but the chairman of the board of the nature park, Torben Juul-Olsen, has a concern that more Danes will experience in the future.

We have met at the nicely renovated Hanstholm Lighthouse and are moving past one of the lighthouse's extensions through a lush thicket. We are on our way to see a view that he has shown before – precisely in late summer 2021, when the city was visited by Queen Margrethe.

- She walked with me here, Torben Juul-Olsen says of the small path that must have been difficult for the poorly walking regent to climb.

A moment later we are standing with the view, which is literally panoramic and so royal that you have to be completely still.

- This is where they should be, the chairman of the board points to a corner along the coast very close to the view.

- This is the harbor area, where four 180-meter-high windmills are planned. It is a real shame for the nature experience, and we are concerned about the bird life such as the tinkling tern, the puffin and the crane, he says.

The planned turbines are of a height that is otherwise almost only seen offshore. But now they are planned on the port area. The situation is also such that the port has a deficit that makes any earnings imperative. Torben Juul-Olsen is very familiar with municipal wind turbine planning; as a former technical director in Thisted Municipality, he was already part of receiving an award for good wind turbine planning back in the 1990s. He also knows port operations very well, because he has been acting port director in Hanstholm Port twice in the last decade.

- I am a big supporter of wind turbines, but we are concerned about the wildlife and the entire biodiversity, he explains.

Within the last year, Torben Juul-Olsen has also tried to draw attention to an alternative location for the turbines by contacting Hanstholm Port's recently retired chairman of the board. In the meantime, the port has returned to the municipality, and now the work is starting a little again.

- I suggest that the four turbines be set up at Hjertebjerg instead. There are eight turbines there, which are about 25-30 years old. I certainly hope that a better solution is found, like that, says Torben Juul-Olsen.

Torben Juul-Olsen has started a discussion about the location of more land-based wind turbines, which Denmark will most likely have in the future. (The four planned wind turbines will be to the left of Torben Juul-Olsen in the picture.)
