BORNHOLM: The Bornholm Regional Municipality is joining the Joint Council of the Rural Districts. The regional municipality and its mayor, Jacob Trøst (K), are looking forward to the membership and find it natural to join the community, whose mission is to create a Denmark in balance, where it is attractive to live, work and live in all parts of the country, writes the joint council.

Like several other peripheral municipalities, Bornholm is challenged by its demographics, and as an island is particularly vulnerable, as there are no neighboring municipalities to lean on. Joining the Joint Council should be seen as part of Bornholm's efforts to attract more immigrants and to build a more sustainable society in every way.

- As an island and peripheral municipality, it is a strong community to join. It is also of great importance to us that the Joint Council works from a green overall plan. The plan indicates that rural municipalities must be guaranteed compensation by providing land for energy plants, so that the added value that the energy plants will create also accrues to the local areas that will be affected, says Mayor Jacob Trøst.

- It is super relevant for Bornholm, which is facing having to provide land for the Energy Island's land facilities, he continues.

Climate as a focus area

- Now that Bornholm is to be an energy island and provide land for large energy plants, it is even more relevant for Bornholm to be involved. In the Joint Rural Council, we are actively working to ensure that rural municipalities not only bear the burden, but also reap the benefits of the green transition, says Steffen Damsgaard, chairman of the overall rural organization, and continues:

- Getting it on the national climate agenda is one of our important focus areas, along with other rural policy agendas, which I am sure Bornholm can benefit from.

With Bornholm as a new member, the Joint Rural Council reaches municipality number 56.
