The UK's mining industry is undergoing a renaissance as the government seeks to become more independent from China. In the tourist region of Cornwall, large-scale mining of lithium, a crucial raw material for the production of lithium-ion batteries, is planned. This is reported by the German Spiegel.

- With a lithium hydroxide production plant, Britain is taking the first step towards reducing its dependence on imports, says Jeremy Wrathall, CEO of Cornish Lithium.

Cornish Lithium announces that Cornwall has some of the largest lithium deposits in Europe. The new facility in St. Austell, which opens today, is part of a project that aims to produce 10,000 tonnes of lithium annually by 2027. The extraction will be done in a sustainable way from granite in an old kaolin mine.

- The batteries that will be used in, for example, electric cars and other rechargeable devices require lithium. Until now, all processed lithium has been imported into the UK. But that needs to change, says Jeremy Wrathall.

He points out that Cornwall has some of Europe's largest lithium deposits, which should help the UK reduce its dependence on Chinese imports. Wrathall believes that more than half of the annual need for lithium for electric cars can be covered by the country's own resources.
