Energinet has adopted a new method for capacity calculation, which makes it possible to transport more electricity from north to south. The method, developed in a Nordic collaboration, could potentially lead to lower electricity prices in Denmark by increasing the transport of cheap hydropower from Norway and Sweden. This is what Energinet writes.
- Using Flowbased capacity calculation, we can now send more electricity through the existing electricity grid, from the northern part of the Nordic region to the southern part, including Denmark. The model calculations showed in advance that Flowbased could allow up to 10 percent more, but the first two months of operation of Flowbased have shown up to 20 percent. more capacity utilization, says Rikke Bjerregaard Jørgensen, senior economist in Market Coupling and Transparency.
The flow-based method has been developed in collaboration with Statnett, Fingrid, Svenska Kraftnät and Nordic RCC and uses a dynamic approach to calculate the network's capacity. This ensures that the electricity grid can be utilized closer to the physical limits of transport volume.
The method also contributes to better integration of renewable energy, as it creates space in the grid to handle the production fluctuations that come with solar and wind energy. Flow-based is part of the work to optimize and utilize the electricity grid in the best possible way.
