Norlys sees many tasks for new Minister of Emergency Situations

If the new Ministry of Community Safety and Emergency Preparedness is to truly make a positive difference to Denmark's resilience, it must be able to make decisions across sectors and industries.

On Wednesday, the government presented three new ministries. One of these will be responsible for public safety and emergency preparedness. The minister who will be named on Thursday will have a lot to look after. That is the opinion of Ken Bonefeld Nielsen, a security advisor at Norlys. As one of the largest owners of critical infrastructure, safety and emergency preparedness are an important priority for the energy and telecommunications group, which is therefore happy about the new ministry.

-  We have largely lacked an overall coordinating authority both before and during crisis situations in Denmark, and therefore the government should also be highly commended for prioritizing emergency preparedness. The geopolitical situation combined with Denmark's advanced and complex infrastructure requires that we establish the ministry as soon as possible, because we are already in a hybrid war, where hostile actors operate in the gray areas and constantly use new methods, says Ken Bonefeld Nielsen in a press release.

He points out that Denmark as a digitalized society is particularly vulnerable, and that is why Norlys itself has invested massively in the protection of the group's critical systems and infrastructure in recent years in order to be as well prepared as possible for everything from cyber attacks to severe weather. But the work that the individual company, sector or authority does cannot stand alone, believes Ken Bonefeld Nielsen. A much higher degree of cross-cutting coordination is needed for us to achieve real resilience.

- When we are in real crises, it is crucial that there is one central authority that effectively coordinates the efforts and, not least, prioritizes what is most important for society in the situation. That is why I am also pleased that the Prime Minister has given the new Ministry of Community Safety and Emergency Preparedness a strong mandate, so that it has the power to act when decisions have to be made across sectors, says Ken Bonefeld.
