European Energy has produced the first raw e-methanol at the Kassø PtX plant using biogenic CO? from the biogas plant in Tønder.  European Energy writes in a press release.

The PtX plant in Kassø is in the test phase and has a capacity to produce 42,000 tons of e-methanol using three electrolyzers from Siemens Energy and a methanol plant developed by European Energy. The electrolyzers have a total capacity of 52.5 MW and are primarily powered by the nearby Kassø solar park, which is also operated by European Energy.

- We are proud to have produced the first raw methanol at our plant in Kassø. We are now working to refine the process, improve efficiency and reduce costs for future projects, says Emil Vikjær-Andresen, CEO of European Energy.

- This proves that PtX offers a practical and scalable solution to decarbonize industries that are not easily electrified.

The production of methanol at the Kassø plant occurs shortly after the plant started producing green hydrogen. Now the first methanol has been produced by combining hydrogen with biogenic CO? in the methanol reactor, confirming the functionality of the methanol plant.

The next test phase involves refining the methanol through distillation to achieve the necessary purity for industrial use. The experience from this first production phase will be crucial for optimizing future operations and scaling up production.

The plant is expected to produce fully refined e-methanol in the first half of 2025.
