The lack of qualified labor is detrimental to the future of Europe.

This was stated by Minister for Children and Education Mattias Tesfaye (S) on his way to an informal meeting of EU education ministers in Herning on Friday.

At Friday's meeting, the Danish EU presidency succeeded, as expected, in gathering support for action.

At the meeting, all EU countries agreed on a declaration that will pave the way for stronger vocational education and training across Europe.

- I am pleased that we agreed that it is necessary to further improve the quality of vocational education and training, says Mattias Tesfaye in a press release.

The so-called Herning Declaration emphasizes the necessity of strengthening the "relevance, quality and attractiveness" of vocational education and training. This is done in order to address the "digital, green and demographic transition" in Europe.

- Vocational education and training is crucial both for the green transition and for key functions in welfare societies throughout Europe, says Mattias Tesfaye.

More young women

The declaration calls, among other things, for closer cooperation between vocational education and training and the social partners. The declaration also calls for increased focus on "social inclusion and equal access" to education.

The goal is, among other things, to ensure that more young women apply for vocational training.

This was stated by EU Commissioner for Social Rights and Skills, High Quality Jobs and Preparedness Roxana Mînzatu in her opening speech at the meeting.

At the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI), DI Deputy Director Signe Tychsen Philip believes that there are clear Danish influences in the declaration.

- This is particularly visible because there is a strong focus on creating close and binding cooperation between European companies, schools and authorities.

- It is crucial if we are to ensure that vocational training keeps pace with developments in the labour market, says Signe Tychsen Philip.

She believes that the declaration is right on target in light of Europe's increasing focus on the build-up of defence and the continued fight against climate challenges.

- We really need more young people to study in technology, construction, IT and science, i.e. the so-called STEM courses.

- They are the ones who will build the Europe of the future, says Signe Tychsen Philip.
