The US tariff break for the next 90 days includes goods sent across the Atlantic from the EU to the US. An unnamed White House official confirmed this to the BBC. This means that goods from EU countries - including Denmark - will not be subject to a basic tariff of 10 percent during the period. US President Donald Trump announced a 20 percent tariff on the EU last week.

The EU has not yet come up with a response to the US tariffs, which seems to have had an effect on Trump. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has called for negotiations with the US rather than escalating the situation. On Wednesday, Trump announced a 90-day break for precisely those countries that have wanted to negotiate. However, it was unclear which countries were included in the break.

The BBC reports that the tariff break applies to all countries with the exception of Mexico, Canada and China. China has chosen to respond to the US tariffs, which has led to a tariff war between two of the world's largest economies. On Wednesday, Trump chose to increase tariffs on Chinese goods to 125 percent.

Canada and Mexico, whose exports are subject to a 25 percent tariff. - are also not included in the 90-day break, the unnamed White House official told the BBC.  The US imposed a 25 percent tariff on Mexican and Canadian goods in February with a demand that the two countries do more to slow the influx of migrants to the US and the smuggling of fentanyl into the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on the social media X on Wednesday that he had agreed with Trump that the US and Canada would begin negotiations after the Canadian parliamentary elections on April 28. The negotiations will include both the economy and security. Carney also believes that the world is facing major changes in global trade after Wednesday's announcement from Trump.

- The president has signaled that the United States will enter into bilateral negotiations with a number of other countries.

- This will likely result in a fundamental restructuring of the global trading system, writes Mark Carney on X.
