On Wednesday, May 28, Anders Bjarklev has been employed by the state for 40 years. He is currently the rector of the Technical University of Denmark, DTU, a position he has held since 2011. Previously, he worked, among other things, as a researcher in optical fibers, which in the late 1990s led to discoveries that were used in, among other things, the manufacturing and space industries. This is stated by DTU in a press release.
The discoveries led to the founding of the company NKT Photonics, which was founded by researchers, DTU and the company NKT. According to Anders Bjarklev, the experiences from that process have had an impact on his work as a leader at DTU.
- I wanted to create massive progress for innovation in the university world, says Anders Bjarklev, CEO of DTU.
DTU has increased the number of annual startups from six to 120 in the period from 2010 to 2024. The university is among the most patent-seeking actors in Denmark and, according to its own information, has increased the capital it takes in from 700 million DKK to 2.6 billion DKK in five years. DTU has been ranked first among technical universities in the EU in the EngiRank ranking.
Anders Bjarklev has recently been extended as rector until autumn 2028. In this connection, he has announced that DTU will in future aim to hatch 200 startups per year, of which 10 out of every 100 should be able to be scaled up.
- The mission is clear: We must bring as many good ideas and solutions as possible from the auditoriums and laboratories into the world, where they can make a difference. And that difference must be felt, he says.
