With a total of 4,301 applicants, civil engineering is once again the country's most sought-after education this year. This is according to a statement from the Ministry of Higher Education and Research on the number of applications for higher education.

A total of 85,508 people have applied for higher education this year. This is a small increase of 356 people compared to 2024. The figures cover both quota 1 and quota 2 applications.

Last year, the civil engineering program overtook the teacher education program with the most applicants. This year, there has also been a small increase in applications for the so-called STEM programs, which are technical and natural science programs, which the civil engineering program also falls under. 19,877 people have applied for a STEM education this year.

Overall, Minister of Education and Research Christina Egelund (M) is pleased that there has been a small increase in the number of applicants this year.

- And it is positive that we are maintaining a high number of applications for IT and STEM education programs after many years of urging. The business community needs that, so that is good, she says.

Conversely, the number of applications for humanities education programs has fallen. This year, 5,138 people applied for a humanities education program. In particular, foreign language programs have experienced a decline in demand.

The Danish Association of Engineers is calling for more study places

Compared to 2024, demand for the Bachelor of Engineering program is at the same level, while demand for the Master of Engineering program is down slightly by four percent, but it maintains its position as the most sought-after program. Laura Klitgaard, chairwoman of the Danish Association of Engineers, IDA, is pleased with the great interest from young people, but she is also disappointed that there is a prospect that fewer will be admitted.

- It is of course absolutely fantastic that so many young people are applying for technical and scientific programs. And in a time of climate challenges, booming digitalization and the building of both Danish and European defense capacity, we should admit more people to STEM programs. Unfortunately, the university reform leaves us with unanswered questions about who will secure Denmark against cyberattacks, and who will devise and create new solutions that can ensure that we actually get a green transition and a strong defense when not enough people are educated, she says.

On Saturday at 12:00, there was an application deadline for applying for admission to higher education via quota 1. Quota 1 applicants are admitted solely based on grade point average.

In March, there was an application deadline for applications via quota 2, which, in addition to grade point average, is assessed based on various academic and general activities. Applicants will be notified of admission to the programs on July 28.
