Both the EU and the US are now imposing sanctions that will severely impact Russia's earnings from the sale of oil and gas. This is important for reaching a ceasefire, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj. The announcement comes ahead of the EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.

- Russia is showing no signs of wanting to stop the war. They are attacking our schools and kindergartens. We must increase the pressure on Putin to stop the war, says Zelenskyj.

He therefore welcomes the fact that the EU and the US are imposing new sanctions within the same day. Trump is imposing sanctions on Russian oil companies, citing the lack of progress in negotiations for a ceasefire.

At the same time, the EU countries have agreed on the 19th package of sanctions against Russia. The EU sanctions target, among other things, Russian oil and gas and the Russian shadow fleet.

- These are tough sanctions against Russia. The 19th sanctions package is very important, but the US sanctions are also very important. It is a good signal to other countries in the world to join the sanctions. We need to hit Russia's shadow fleet until Putin wants to stop the war, says Zelenskyj.

He believes that a ceasefire is possible if the pressure on Russia is increased.

- A ceasefire is possible, of course. We all need a ceasefire. But we need more pressure on Russia to get the ceasefire, says Zelenskyj.

Mette Frederiksen welcomes tighter sanctions

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) is pleased that the US and the EU are both tightening the sanctions against Russia.

- It is positive that the EU is today getting the 19th sanctions package in place, and that the Americans are announcing new sanctions in the oil sector. We have previously followed suit on some sanctions. We are doing the same today. The next step must then be for Ukraine to get the weapons it needs to ensure that a European country does not lose this war, says Mette Frederiksen.

Here, the leaders of the EU countries are expected to give the green light on Thursday to a "compensation loan" to Ukraine taken from the frozen Russian funds.

The loan of an expected 140 billion euros is planned to be paid in installments. The money is to help support Ukraine and the country's war effort for the next two years.

However, the EU countries will have to guarantee the loan, which could ultimately mean that the bill falls back on European taxpayers if Ukraine cannot pay.
