The United States is imposing sanctions on two Russian energy companies on Wednesday, the US Treasury Department said in a press release.
The companies Rosneft and Lukoil are now being hit by sanctions. They come because Russian President Vladimir Putin is unwilling to make peace with Ukraine, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.
- Because President Putin will not end this senseless war, the Treasury Department is sanctioning Russia's two largest oil companies that are financing the Kremlin's war machine.
- The Treasury Department is ready to take further action if necessary to support President Trump's efforts to end yet another war. We call on our allies to join us in living up to these sanctions, Bessent said in the press release.
For months, US President Donald Trump has held back from imposing new sanctions on Russia in the hope of persuading Putin to make peace, the AFP news agency reports.
The sanctions on Wednesday come after Trump pulled the brakes on Tuesday in connection with the planning of a meeting between him and Putin in Budapest. It had been arranged during a telephone conversation between the two presidents, which Trump believed had gone well.
But the meeting will not happen anyway - at least not for the time being - because Trump does not want to waste his time, he said on Tuesday. Trump said something similar in his speech on Wednesday.
When he talks on the phone with Putin, they are good conversations, but they lead nowhere, Donald Trump told reporters at the White House, according to the Reuters news agency. Hopefully the new sanctions will make Putin more reasonable, he added.
- These are some huge sanctions, and we hope they don't last too long. We hope the war will be ended, Trump also said, according to AFP.
