The Ukrainian power grid was subjected to extensive attacks on Thursday. Ukrainian Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko wrote in a Facebook post, according to the AFP news agency.

He calls it a "massive hostile attack".

- Once again, the energy sector is under massive hostile attack. There are attacks on energy facilities across Ukraine, it says.

Ukraine's national electricity provider has "immediately introduced power cuts" to save electricity and limit damage, the minister said.

The message comes after air raid alerts were also sounded across Ukraine overnight due to suspected Russian missile attacks.

- There is an air raid alert across Ukraine due to a missile threat, the Ukrainian Air Force writes on the Telegram communication service.

The missiles were headed for Kharkiv, Odesa and eight other regions, it says.

- Kharkiv, take cover, the Air Force writes.

The missile attack comes the day after President-elect Donald Trump appointed former General Keith Kellogg, who is considered a Trump loyalist, as the US special envoy to Ukraine. He is tasked with trying to put an end to the war.

Trump's election victory in the US presidential election on November 5 has led to speculation about how the war in Ukraine will develop.

Trump has previously criticized the many billions of dollars that the US has sent to Ukraine during the war. Conversely, Trump has also promised that he will quickly ensure that the war ends - without specifying how.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for over 1,000 days - since February 24, 2022.
