Green Power Denmark demands binding electrification targets in the Climate Act

Green Power Denmark wants the government to set a binding target for the electrification of Denmark. The organization is launching 45 fully funded proposals in its new budget bill.

The government should set a specific target for the electrification of Denmark and write it directly into the Climate Act. This is the opinion of the business organization Green Power Denmark, which on Thursday presented its green finance bill proposal with 45 fully funded proposals.

According to the organization, more green electricity is the key to both cheaper energy, new jobs and stronger national security:

- The transition from black and climate-damaging fuels to Danish-produced, green electricity is without a doubt Denmark's largest growth engine in the 21st century, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark. He continues:

- It could create up to 39,000 full-time jobs a year, provide cheaper energy and more money in the bank, and help meet our climate goals by completely cutting CO2 emissions. Therefore, there is a need for a binding target for how we will run our society on much more green electricity in the future, and that target must be tied to the Climate Act.

The organization points out that the share of electricity in energy consumption today is 21 percent, but that it must increase to at least 60 percent by 2035 if Denmark is to achieve its climate goals and maintain prosperity.

Electrification plan for 120 million kroner

To achieve the target, Green Power Denmark proposes that 120 million kroner be allocated in the Finance Act to develop Denmark's first electrification action plan.

The plan must lay the foundation for Denmark to achieve 60 percent electrification of energy consumption by 2035.

- It sounds ambitious - and it is, but we can do it both economically sensible, socially balanced and technologically realistic. We show this with our entire catalogue of a total of 45 fully funded proposals in our green finance bill proposal. The industry is ready to move - and to move quickly - but we need political initiative and direction. It is now that Denmark must take the first, decisive step towards a greener and safer future, says Kristian Jensen.

The organisation also highlights that the green transition is about safety. Today, Denmark and Europe are dependent on oil and gas from unstable regimes, which makes energy supply vulnerable to geopolitical conflicts.

Among the proposals are also investments in the electricity grid, more charging stations, digital energy solutions and research into drone technology that can strengthen security of supply against both cyber attacks, natural disasters and geopolitical tensions.

Facts about the proposal
  • Green Power Denmark presents a total of 45 proposals, which according to the organization are financed krone for krone.
  • This is the third time that it has published a budget bill proposal.
  • The proposals are grouped into five tracks:

    1) Greener and cheaper energy for the Danes
    2) Green power, more and faster
    3) Green infrastructure
    4) Green competitiveness and Danish workplaces
    5) Green and safe
