The European Commission presented its plans to reduce European energy prices and increase competitiveness with the Clean Industrial Deal and Affordable Energy Action Plan on Wednesday.

The plans include a target that 32 percent of energy consumption in the EU by 2030 should come from electricity. Today, only 23 percent of Europe's energy consumption is electrified, and in Denmark it is only around 20 percent. The proposal also calls on member states to lower electricity taxes.

These measures are praised by Green Power Denmark. In a press release, the industry organization states that it views the EU's electrification goals and the lower taxation of electricity positively, as according to Green Power Denmark, this will make energy cheaper, more secure and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

- We have been fighting for this for a long time. When you replace natural gas, oil and coal with green electricity from solar cells and wind turbines, you get energy that is cheaper, safer and that we can produce ourselves instead of having to buy it from third countries, with which we may not share a worldview, says Ole Rydahl Svensson, head of public affairs, EU and press at Green Power Denmark.

Warns against support for natural gas

Green Power Denmark also emphasizes that the initiative can create more jobs in the energy industry, which already employs over 100,000 people in Denmark. At the same time, the organization warns that the EU Commission will make it possible to provide state support for natural gas in the event of large price fluctuations.

- The Commission will make it possible to provide state support for natural gas in the event of large price fluctuations. We would strongly warn against this. It is unwise to support and maintain a large consumption of fossil fuels, which we import to a large extent. This will probably also lead to higher electricity prices in the long term, says Ole Rydahl Svensson.

However, Green Power Denmark is pleased that the EU continues to focus on green hydrogen and supports an upcoming 3rd auction in the European hydrogen bank.
