Energinet recognizes pressure on the electricity grid – Green Power Denmark has the solution: Build, build, build

Energinet has acknowledged in a press release on Friday that the Danish transmission grid is under pressure as a result of the rapid expansion of, among other things, data centers, large-consumption companies, and solar and wind farms. Therefore, the state-owned company will now, at the request of the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard (M), set up a fast-working working group to look at challenges and possible solutions. This is stated by Green Power Denmark in a press release.

The industry organization would like to contribute to the work, but at the same time emphasizes that, according to them, the situation is a result of Energinet having expanded the transmission grid too little and too slowly over a long period of time. The consequence is that new, large electricity consumers in several places in the country cannot be connected, even though the local grid companies have increased their investments significantly.

- Energinet must go on the offensive and build more and much faster than they do today. Therefore, it is very good and absolutely necessary that the minister now focuses on how Energinet will be able to deliver the electricity that businesses and district heating plants need, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

Build, build build

According to the organization, the local grid companies have for years intensified their efforts and doubled their investments in their part of the electricity grid, but are now being slowed down by a lack of capacity in the "electricity grid highways": the transmission grid, which is Energinet's responsibility. Green Power Denmark believes that the bottlenecks in the transmission grid risk delaying both electrification and the green transition.

The organization is therefore calling for a more offensive approach, where the solution for Energinet is actually simple. The state-owned company should give higher priority to concrete expansion and ensure that necessary equipment is available when the need arises.

- We are happy to help the minister find solutions in both the short and long term. Our approach is that Energinet must be much more offensive. My message is: Build, build, build. Buy large quantities so that there are transformers in stock and think new things in terms of technical solutions that can provide more capacity now and here, says Kristian Jensen.

Green Power Denmark also points out that the strong growth in electricity consumption limits the risk of wrong investments, and that the challenge instead is the pace of expansion.

- Although there is a prospect of strong growth in electricity consumption, which makes it almost impossible to make wrong investments, the investments are not coming fast enough, and it takes far too long to build new electricity connections. Energinet must focus their efforts and use the resources to build more transmission networks, says Kristian Jensen.
