Danish Metal: New Trump tariffs hit the US itself

Dansk Metal's chief economist warns against protectionism: It is American consumers and industrial workers who pay the price

US President Donald Trump's decision to double tariffs on steel and aluminium came into effect on 4 June 2025. The measure is unlikely to affect Danish jobs, Dansk Metal estimates. On the other hand, the economic consequences in the US could be significant. Dansk Metal writes.

- The new US tariffs on steel and aluminium will not have a major impact on employment in Denmark. Our exports of steel and aluminium to the US account for less than ½ per cent of our total exports of goods. By far the most steel and aluminium used by the US comes from Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Asia, says Erik Bjørsted, chief economist at Dansk Metal.

The organisation points out that Danish industry is competitive and that unemployment among its members is as low as 1.8 per cent. It is therefore unlikely that the new tariffs will have negative consequences for Danish companies.

According to Dansk Metal, the consequences will be felt more in the USA, where more expensive raw materials and higher production costs could hit the very jobs that Trump is trying to protect. The organization warns against protectionist measures and calls for a focus on free and fair trade.
