FREDERIKSHAVN: It is not only a victory for Frederikshavn, but for all of North Jutland that the city has been designated to build new military ships for the Danish defense.
This is what the mayor of Frederikshavn Municipality Karsten Thomsen (S) says.
- I can't remember the last time I was as happy as I am today. Even though the wait has been long, it was worth the wait, he says.
On Friday evening, the parties behind the defense agreement reached a political agreement that a new naval shipyard will be built in Frederikshavn.
The agreement was presented by Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen (V) at a press conference.
- I have no doubt for a second that this decision will have a great impact on Danish society. The fact that we have now agreed to build our own military ships will resonate, the minister said at the press conference.
Opportunities for local growth
According to Karsten Thomsen, the location of the shipyard will open up opportunities for growth in the area - both directly and through related businesses.
- This will have great significance for the whole of North Jutland, and it will open up some jobs, says the mayor.
He estimates that the shipyard will create between 500 and 600 new jobs in the municipality.
- I hope that this can make more people move to Frederikshavn. We have a fantastically lovely municipality, he says.
Karsten Thomsen is also pleased with the cooperation that has taken place around the project among the city council, parliamentarians and the business community.
Planning begins in August
The new naval shipyard is expected to be located on an area of approximately 135,000 square meters in Frederikshavn Harbour.
The location is close to Naval Station Frederikshavn, which is one of the Danish Armed Forces' two naval stations.
In a press release, Frederikshavn Municipality writes that the new shipyard will be able to support the Danish Armed Forces' operational needs and contribute to more efficient maintenance and new construction of naval vessels.
According to the municipality, the specific planning and establishment of the shipyard can begin in August.
In addition to Frederikshavn, ports in Skagen, Esbjerg and Odense had also bid to get the task.
