There will always be difficulties in transition periods, says Trump, who is happy with how things are going in the United States.

US President Donald Trump acknowledges that there will be difficulties associated with the tariff policy he is pursuing.  But he also maintains that he has set the right course for the country.  During a meeting with his ministers at the White House on Thursday, which was broadcast on television, Trump noted that US stocks rose a lot on Wednesday. On Thursday, they plunged again.

- It was a big day yesterday. There will always be transition difficulties. But it was the biggest day in history. So we are very happy with how the country is doing. We are trying to get the world to treat us fairly, Trump said at the meeting.

On Wednesday, Trump raised the tariff rate on Chinese goods, while at the same time introducing a 90-day tariff break for a large number of other countries.  The break means that during the period only a basic tariff of 10 percent will have to be paid on goods from the countries. They had otherwise been imposed much higher tariffs by Trump last week. Since then, many countries have approached the United States to make new agreements for trade.

- Everyone wants to make a deal, Trump said at Thursday's meeting.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said something similar. The countries have made offers that they "never would have made otherwise" if it weren't for Trump's policies.

- We are now getting the respect we deserve.

- I think you will see one historic agreement after another, Lutnick said.

China is the country that Trump has been targeting the most. China, in turn, has raised tariffs on American products. After the latest tariff increase, the American tariff rate on goods from China is 145 percent. But just like other countries, the United States is ready to make a deal, Trump said at the meeting with his ministers.

- I think we will find something that is really good for both countries, said Trump, who, however, reiterated that in his eyes, China has been "ripping off" the United States for a long time.
