Christine Nellemann has been appointed as the new chair of the Danish Council of Ethics. The Ministry of the Interior and Health wrote in a press release on Wednesday. She has been a member of the council since 2023 and has a background as a researcher and most recently as vice-rector at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

In her previous role on the council, she has contributed knowledge within health, nature and food. The Council of Ethics is appointed by the Minister of Health and consists of a total of 17 members.

It was established to, for example, create debate about new bio- and genetic technologies that affect human life, nature, the environment and food. The council also takes a position on ethical issues that have a relationship with our healthcare system. This could be a topic such as abortion. The current Minister of the Interior and Health, Sophie Løhde (V), says that the council plays an important role.

- In a time when the world is changing rapidly, we often encounter new ethical questions and dilemmas, and it is good that the Council of Ethics can contribute to the societal debate with qualified considerations and perspectives, she says in the announcement.

- I am pleased that Christine Nellemann is now taking over the chair and taking the lead in the council's work.

53-year-old Christine Nellemann took over the position on Tuesday and has thus replaced Leif Vestergaard, who has been a member since 2019 and chair since 2022.

Members are appointed for a period of three years and can be members for a maximum of six years. Therefore, the replacement of the chair is the result of the natural reshuffle. Sophie Løhde sees, among other things, a strength in the new chairman's "engagement in current social issues".

- At the same time, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing chairman, Leif Vestergaard, who has made a great effort in recent years, says the minister.
