New report: Denmark can save money by phasing out all fossil cars by 2040

A new calculation made by EA Energianalyse for the Council for Green Transition shows that a faster transition to green road transport will save Danish society a total of DKK 7.1 billion in 2040.

Denmark and the EU use energy in a way that exceeds several planetary boundaries. According to a new report 'Clean energy - within planetary boundaries in 2040' from the Council for Green Transition, which will be published on Monday, September 30, 2024, the transport sector is still highly dependent on fossil energy, primarily in the form of oil. The Council for Green Transition writes in a press release.

The report emphasizes the need for full electrification of road transport and a faster phasing out of fossil cars in order to achieve an energy system within planetary boundaries by 2040. And it shows that it will actually be cheaper for society and households to accelerate the green transition.

To reach the goal in 2040, sales of fossil cars need to be largely stopped over the next few years. In the first half of 2024, electric cars accounted for 65 percent. of new sales in households in Denmark.

- The transition from combustion engines to electric motors in road transport is a big change, but has many great advantages. It allows us to quickly introduce renewable energy into the sector, while at the same time it is a very significant energy efficiency improvement that also significantly reduces air and noise pollution in cities, says Jeppe Juul, head of transport policy at the Council for Green Transition.

Although electric vehicles are often more expensive to purchase, they will increasingly be cheaper to run overall. This applies in particular to vehicles that travel long distances such as electric trucks.

The report

The report ‘Clean energy – within planetary boundaries in 2040’ presents a comprehensive analysis of the Danish and European energy system and provides concrete solutions for how we achieve an energy system within planetary boundaries in 2040. The report will be published on September 30, 2024.
