Norne Carbon Storage Hub (Norne) and Port of Aalborg have entered into a 30-year exclusive agreement for the establishment of a CO2 reception facility at the Port of Aalborg. The project, which receives support from the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility, will form the basis for an international CO2 hub with extensive storage and utilization capacity. The parties announced this in a press release.

- Since 2021, we have been working closely with Port of Aalborg, the EU, the Danish government and other key stakeholders. We look forward to building on this long-term partnership - not only to expand beyond the current capacity of 15 million tonnes per year at Norne’s facility, but also to attract new industrial projects to the port that require decarbonization solutions, says Lars Bo Christiansen, CEO of Norne

The CO2 facility will have the capacity to handle 15 million tonnes per year. tonnes annually and will be connected to pipelines to onshore and nearshore storage facilities. A new 500-metre-long quay with an associated area of 60,000 square metres will be built in connection with the project, which will function as a reception point for CO2 from both Danish and European emitters.

The project is operated by Norne, a company under the American Fidelis New Energy, and has been designated as a Project of Common Interest by the EU. This provides access to priority regulatory treatment and the possibility of additional EU funding. Norne has already completed technical design studies and environmental assessments for both the reception facility and associated infrastructure.

- We are very excited to be able to continue the work we have been doing together with Fidelis and Norne since 2021 to make Aalborg a central CO2 hub, enabling economic and safe storage of CO2 onshore and nearshore. In addition, we are pleased to be able to offer decarbonization solutions that can attract new industries to Aalborg. We therefore see the collaboration with Norne as an important strategic differentiation in our business development, as we expand the port's role in the work to decarbonize Denmark and the EU, says Kristian Thulesen Dahl, CEO of Port of Aalborg.
