In the period 25 October – 24 November 2023, interested parties participated in the first tender for onshore CO2 storage in Denmark under the CO2RYLUS project, which is a project that will make it possible to demonstrate the entire value chain for onshore CO2 storage – from CO2 capture to transport to permanent underground storage in Stenlille.

In Stenlille, Energinet's company Gas Storage Denmark (GSD) has more than 30 years of experience with natural gas storage. The project will generate new knowledge for the Danish CCS sector. GSD has now signed the first contracts, and has thus taken a big step closer to realization.

- There was great interest in the tender, which resulted in us now signing contracts with both national and international bidders. The total storage capacity that has been awarded in the tender round is 1.77 million tons of CO2 over a ten-year period, which corresponds to 88 percent of the tendered amount of two million tons, and it must be said to be a very good start for the project, says GSD's CEO Martin Christensen.

With the signing of the contracts, GSD has come a big step closer to its goal of injecting and storing the first CO2 as early as April 1, 2026.

The next step in the process is now to secure the prerequisites for the final realization of the project, which includes, among other things, GSD clarifying various reservations and obtaining the necessary permits from authorities, including the license for storing CO2 in Stenlille, which is expected to be tendered by the Danish Energy Agency before the end of the year.
