Major investments should be made in innovation, energy and green transition so that the EU can compete globally. This is the conclusion from large parts of the Danish business community, following the presentation of Mario Draghi's report on the competitiveness of the EU.
The report points out that the EU has lost productivity over several decades compared to the USA and China. As a result, the EU constitutes an increasingly smaller part of the world economy.
A situation that, according to the report, can only be corrected through enormous investments and reforms in the EU. A conclusion shared by the Danish business community.
- Big time investment must be made in innovation in Europe, energy prices must go down, and Europe must reduce its dependence on other regions, not least in the area of security policy, says CEO of DI, Lars Sandahl Sørensen.
Danish Business sees several good proposals
Danish Business's CEO, Brian Mikkelsen, also sees many good proposals in the Draghi report. Among other things, the electrification of Europe must be accelerated.
Therefore, one has to enter the discussions about financing with an open mind, says Brian Mikkelsen.
- Mario Draghi is proposing a major change to the EU budget. We support that. In Dansk Erhverv, we believe that agricultural support should be restructured so that we get more environment for the money, less state control in production and more market thinking.
- Draghi is also opening up some difficult discussions about the financing of the EU. We will approach that debate completely without prejudice. Because we will have to deal with the fact that China and the USA are using public finances to strengthen their own industries and distort global competition, says Brian Mikkelsen.
Green Power Denmark: Green transition can prevent a knockout
The green industry is among the sectors that can benefit most from the recommendations from the Draghi report being implemented. However, CEO of Green Power Denmark, Kristian Jensen, believes that the investments are necessary because "European competitiveness is being sent to the polls, especially by the USA and China".
- Green transition can prevent a knockout, but it requires the EU to take action now. We simply need to add green electricity to the former coal union, says Kristian Jensen.
He believes that increased use of green electricity could lower energy prices in the EU, create more jobs, strengthen the EU's independence and reduce CO2 emissions.
- That is why we have proposed a European target for converting households and companies to the use of electricity. We hope that this will find its way into the Green Industrial Plan, says Kristian Jensen.
