ARC will capture CO2 – with or without support

The prospect of government support from the CCS pool is crucial to ARC's plan to establish CO2 capture on Amager Bakke. But if the support fails, the company will not give up on its ambitions.

CO2 capture at waste-to-energy plants will be crucial to reducing emissions in the future, and ARC's ambition is clear: They want to capture 400,000 tons of CO2 per year from Amager Bakke in collaboration with E.ON. However, the joint project CopenCapture requires that the company participate in the state's CCS pool.

That is indeed possible, because CopenCapture is one of ten projects that have been prequalified by the Danish Energy Agency to be part of the final race for the 28.6 billion from the CCS pool. The pool covers the period 2029 to 2044 and, according to the agency, will contribute to reducing Denmark's annual CO2 emissions by 2.3 million. tons from 2030. Which projects will receive support will be decided in April 2026.

The support is crucial to getting ARC and E.ON's project off the ground in the near future. But even without support, the plans are not dead. This is what Dansk Fjernvarme writes.

- If we don't get the support, we can't invest in the short term. But we won't get off the hook for that reason. I believe that it will become a license to operate at some point. We won't be allowed to run a waste-to-energy plant without dealing with our climate emissions, says Jacob Hartvig Simonsen, CEO of ARC.

CopenCapture will rest on four financial pillars: state support, savings on CO2 quotas, sale of surplus heat and income from CO2 credits. The increasing costs of quotas and taxes in particular may make it more profitable to invest in fishing technology in the long term, but today state support is still necessary, the director believes.

- Theoretically, the costs of meeting quotas and taxes will be so high that it will be cheaper to invest in equipment to remove CO2. But we are not there yet. So that alone is not enough. For the calculation to work, we also need state support, Jacob Hartvig Simonsen.
