Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has commenced construction of Summerfield, a 240 MW / 960 MWh battery energy storage system in the Australian state of South Australia. This follows the final investment decision (FID) for the project being made in September 2024. The project is expected to be operational in 2027, CIP said in a press release.

The facility is strategically located close to transmission infrastructure and will support the South Australian Government’s goal of 100 percent net renewable energy by 2027. The battery will store excess wind and solar energy and provide power during periods of high demand. In addition, a ten-year off-take agreement has been signed with Origin Energy, an Australian power producer and energy trader.

- We are pleased to commence construction of CIP’s first large-scale energy storage project in Australia, which will be one of the largest in South Australia. CIP has a strong track record of developing, owning and operating renewable energy projects globally, and we look forward to bringing this expertise to Australia, says Jørn Hammer, Partner and Head of CIP Australia.

The Summerfield project is part of CIP’s CI V fund, which aims to raise DKK 90 billion for investment in renewable energy technologies across Europe, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.
