The number of start-ups in Denmark fell in 2025 to the lowest level since statistics began in 2015. A total of 22,949 new companies were registered, which is a decrease of 10 percent compared to 2024, which was the previous low point. The figures come from Statistics Denmark, Danish Business Council informs in a press release.

The development is of concern to Freja Brandhøj, head of entrepreneurship and regulatory simplification at Danish Business Council.

- It is sad to see that the number of start-ups is again declining in Denmark. We need new entrepreneurs to create the jobs, prosperity and welfare of the future. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that we reverse the trend as soon as possible, she says.

According to Danish Business Council, the decline is broadly based across industries. Compared to 2024, there are fewer newly registered companies in almost all industries, only the information and communication industry stands out with progress.

The organization points out that there are already political tools that can be used to strengthen entrepreneurship. Here, Freja Brandhøj highlights, among other things, the taxation of share gains as a barrier.

- If we are to have more new companies, it is not possible for us to continue to have the highest share gains taxation across all OECD countries at 42 percent. Instead, we must introduce a flat rate of 27 percent. on par with our Nordic neighbors, says Freja Brandhøj.

Danish Business also points to the need for easier access to capital, common European rules and better conditions for young entrepreneurs and self-employed people on maternity leave. According to the organization, the figures for 2025 show that there is still a significant task ahead of politicians if entrepreneurship and long-term growth in Denmark are to be strengthened.
