A Ukrainian attack on Russia's energy infrastructure has left more than 550,000 residents of the Belgorod region without electricity and heating, at a time when temperatures are approaching freezing, the region's governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said, according to the AFP news agency on Friday morning.
On Thursday morning, Ukraine's Minister for Reconstruction, Oleksiy Kuleba, said that more than a million residents of the Dnipropetrovsk region in Ukraine were without water and heating after a Russian attack on energy infrastructure on Thursday night.
The energy infrastructure is also among the targets of Russia's retaliatory attack carried out on Friday morning for the alleged Ukrainian attempt to attack President Vladimir Putin's residence in the Novgorod region in late December. Russia has also targeted drone production facilities.
In the fall, Russia escalated its attacks on Ukraine's energy supply, while Ukraine has attacked Russian oil depots and refineries during the same period.
According to the Ukrainian air defense, Russia has sent 242 drones into the country and fired 36 missiles on Friday morning. According to the Reuters news agency, Ukraine's air defense has shot down 226 of the drones and 18 of the missiles.
In December, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Russian accusations of an alleged attempt to hit President Putin's residence, located about 1,100 kilometers north of the Ukrainian border. He called it "another lie from the Russian Federation".
US President Donald Trump said he did not believe Russian claims that Ukraine had attempted to target Putin's residence.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has claimed that Ukraine attempted to hit the residence with 91 long-range drones. But Lavrov said they were all shot down and that there was no damage to people or equipment.
For a long time, Trump has tried to mediate between the countries, but so far no peace agreement or ceasefire has been reached.
