US President Donald Trump is "probably two days" away from sending the EU a letter with tariffs on exports to the US. Trump said this in connection with a cabinet meeting on Tuesday evening Danish time, writes the news agency Reuters.

Late Monday Danish time, Trump decided to postpone a deadline for announced new and higher tariffs on goods from the EU and a number of other countries, which were supposed to come into effect on Wednesday. The new deadline is August 1.

At the same time as the postponed deadline, the US government announced that it had sent letters with new tariffs to 14 countries. Among them are Japan and South Korea, which will be subject to new tariffs of 25 percent from August 1.

On Monday, Reuters wrote, citing unnamed EU sources, that the EU would not receive a letter. But it may still happen in a few days.

There are currently negotiations between the EU Commission and the Trump administration to avoid a tariff war. At the government meeting, Trump also said that the EU has treated the US "really nicely" in the recent tariff negotiations, writes Reuters.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) said that a trade war and tariffs would be a burden for both Europe, European companies and citizens, but also the US and the Americans. So "we must do everything we can to avoid it", she said.

- The negotiations are in a critical phase right now, because the deadline is right ahead of us, so I have nothing more to add, said Mette Frederiksen at a press conference in the EU Parliament in Strasbourg.

The EU has prepared a response to the US tariffs. It could come into force if the negotiations do not bear fruit. Tariffs are import taxes levied on goods produced abroad.

It makes imported goods more expensive and is intended to encourage people to choose domestic products, thereby strengthening the country's own economy. But it is not good for companies that export goods.
