Order books in the metal and machinery industry are filling up too slowly.
New figures from Statistics Denmark show that 54 percent of companies in the industry assess that their order backlog is too small or insufficient. The metal industry in particular is experiencing a significant decline: In April, only 32 percent believed that the order backlog was too low.
The metal industry has long struggled with low demand, and this makes it even more vulnerable to international fluctuations such as trade conflicts and tariff barriers.
- When order books become thinner, companies are less equipped to withstand external shocks. New tariffs, trade conflicts or stricter export regulations can quickly be felt in the part of the business community that is closely connected to foreign markets, says Maria Schougaard Berntsen, deputy director of Tekniq, which organizes the technical business community.
Although the outlook is challenging, Tekniq points to positive factors such as low unemployment and a bankruptcy level that is on par with previous years.
