While many projects to produce green fuels via PtX have recently been facing headwinds, European Energy is coming up with a good one on Monday. The energy company is inaugurating its PtX plant in Måde near Esbjerg. The plant marks European Energy's first step into large-scale production of hydrogen using renewable energy, the company said in a press release.
The construction of the plant was actually completed in June. However, the plant has since been thoroughly tested, and after a successful commissioning phase, the plant is now operational with the first electrolysis, which was supplied by the Danish company Stiesdal.
- With the start of operations in Måde, we can deliver green hydrogen to the market. This achievement shows that the transformation of our energy systems is not just a distant vision—it is happening right now. European Energy is proud to be one of the world's leading companies in this area, says Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy.
The green hydrogen produced at the Måde plant will be delivered to the Port of Esbjerg and a world leader in industrial gases. In addition, excess heat from the hydrogen production process will be utilized by DIN Forsyning, the local heating company in Esbjerg municipality.
Just the beginning
There are already plans to expand the plant with two additional electrolyzers, with the next one expected to be installed in 2025. When all three electrolyzers are in operation, the plant will have a total capacity of 12 MW and an expected annual production of 1,500 tons of hydrogen.
Operation of the plant will provide valuable insights into the production and operation of green hydrogen for European Energy.
- This plant is just the beginning. Through the many lessons learned from designing, building and commissioning the plant, we will be able to reduce costs and lead times for future plants, while improving the economics of the projects. And this is crucial to helping decarbonize industries that are difficult to directly electrify, says Emil Vikjær-Andresen, EVP and Head of Power-to-X at European Energy.
European Energy is currently in the commissioning phase of its green methanol plant in Kassø, which is expected to produce the first green methanol by the end of 2024.
