Danish companies can produce large quantities of competitive green hydrogen, while German companies need a future-proof energy supply. There is therefore a strong interest in creating a common market for green hydrogen in Europe. Green Power Denmark, the Confederation of Danish Industry and the Danish-German Chamber of Commerce have entered into a collaboration between companies in both countries to ensure production and consumption of green hydrogen from 2030. Green Power Denmark writes in a press release.

In November 2023, Danish and German companies signed a declaration to establish a market for green hydrogen. Now the declaration is being followed up by a more formalized collaboration in the form of the "German-Danish Green Hydrogen Forum", which is holding its first meeting today in Berlin.

- The market for green hydrogen is still new and immature. The large German companies that will consume the green hydrogen must be sure that they can receive the quantities they need. And producers need to know that they can sell the green hydrogen before they make major investments. The purpose of the forum is, among other things, to create security for both parties, says Camilla Holbech, director of renewable energy, PtX and international cooperation at Green Power Denmark.

The previous German government formulated a strategy that will get large companies to replace natural gas with hydrogen from around 2030. The incoming government will take over the work of translating the strategy into concrete agreements.

- In these times of geopolitical uncertainty, a reliable and sustainable energy supply is more important than ever. We can ensure this by cooperating and creating a market for green hydrogen across borders. This will strengthen Europe's competitiveness, create energy independence and ensure green growth. That is why we are launching the German-Danish Green Hydrogen Forum today, says Andreas Wenzel, CEO of the Danish-German Chamber of Commerce, who looks forward to expanding the collaboration with Green Power Denmark and the Confederation of Danish Industry to promote the development of a cross-border market for green hydrogen.

In Denmark, a political agreement has been reached on a hydrogen pipeline from the Danish-German border to Esbjerg in 2030. Several companies are ready to invest in the production of green hydrogen if there are buyers on the German side of the border.

Danish companies can convert large renewable energy resources on land and at sea into green hydrogen, which can be delivered to the German market at competitive prices via the hydrogen pipeline. In Germany, large companies will use the hydrogen to phase out natural gas from Russia, the USA and countries on the Arabian Peninsula.

- With the decision on the hydrogen pipeline, there is an opportunity to create a market across the border. That is why we must now enter into dialogue with German customers to create the right framework for development. The ambition is that we will have a region that is among the leaders in the world in producing and consuming green hydrogen, says Troels Ranis, Deputy Director General of the Confederation of Danish Industry.
