Hydrogen director warns: Ministry's proposal threatens green business

The government's plans to impose only a minimal requirement for the proportion of green fuels in traditional fuels could have serious consequences for hydrogen producer Everfuel. This is according to the company's CEO Jacob Krogsgaard, who estimates that a large part of the company's business could disappear if the ministry's proposal is implemented. This is reported by Børsen.

- It makes no sense that they will not push the demand for green electricity and hydrogen. There is an opportunity to solve the Gordian knot we have with the green transition in Denmark, where it is very difficult to get a good business case for building more solar parks and wind turbines because the market for green fuels is not keeping up, says Jacob Krogsgaard, CEO of Everfuel.

The background to the unrest in the industry is an executive order in consultation, where the Ministry of Climate and Energy is planning to only require that 1 percent of fuels in 2030 must be produced with renewable energy – so-called RNFBOs. This is the minimum requirement in the EU's RE-III directive, which requires that a total of 5.5 percent of fuels in 2030 be green, but it is up to the countries themselves to distribute between different fuel types. Everfuel also fears the consequences of hydrogen produced at subsidized plants not being allowed to count towards fulfilling the EU requirement. The company's plant in Fredericia is partly financed through the EU's IPCEI program, and therefore a large part of the production risks becoming worthless.

The Ministry of Climate and Energy states in a written response to Børsen that the decision to implement low levels of implementation is to balance EU requirements with the desire to limit costs for both businesses and citizens. The ministry does not specifically address the criticism.
