Hydrogen industry after latest tender round in hydrogen bank: Green hydrogen is cheaper than rumored

The level of support for green hydrogen production drops significantly in the EU Hydrogen Bank's latest tender round, but no Danish projects have received support. The hydrogen industry sees the results as a call to Danish politicians to ensure better conditions for hydrogen and PtX.

The EU's second round of auctions via the Hydrogen Bank has shown that the need for support for green hydrogen is falling significantly. Support levels are now between 0.20 and 0.60 euros per kilo of green hydrogen, which according to the Hydrogen Industry documents that the technology has become much more competitive. A total of 992 million euros (7.4 billion DKK) were awarded to 15 projects in Europe.

Winners include Hydrogen Industry member Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, which together with Vattenfall has received 246 million euros (1.8 billion DKK) in support for their joint venture Zeevont, which is a PtX project that is part of the Dutch offshore wind project IJmuiden Ver Beta.

- The 15 projects that have been awarded a total of 992 million euros will boost hydrogen and PtX development in Europe. It is crucial that we insist on developing and scaling up green hydrogen and PtX production, both to maintain climate ambitions and strengthen security of supply and industrial development, says the Hydrogen Industry's director, Tejs Laustsen Jensen, in a press release.

Although some of the projects have a Danish element in the form of CIP involvement, the Hydrogen Industry had hoped that projects in Denmark would also have received support. Therefore, the organization is calling for action from Danish politicians.

- It is of course a shame that there are no Danish projects among the winners. The results of this round send a clear signal to Danish politicians that we must do much more to ensure the best possible framework for green hydrogen and PtX production in Denmark. Denmark has the potential, but it requires sufficient political framework conditions if we are to be at the forefront of the field, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO of the Hydrogen Industry.

In parallel with the auction in the Hydrogen Bank, some EU countries such as Spain, Austria and Lithuania have used the Auction as a Service mechanism for national PtX tenders. This makes it possible for member states to distribute national funds in combination with EU support, which eases the administrative burden for companies. The Hydrogen Industry calls on Denmark to follow suit if it wants to secure its position as a hydrogen nation.
