Much of the road to the 2030 climate target remains unimplemented

A significant part of the reduction path towards the 2030 climate target still needs to be implemented, even though political agreements have shown the theoretical path.

This is evident from the government's annual climate program, which the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities published on Tuesday morning.

It is calculated here that the reduction of 10.7 million tons of CO2 in 2030 has now been implemented, while the reduction of 4.0 million tons of CO2 is still being implemented.

- We are on the right course towards 2030, but we are still in the middle of the long tough stretch, and now is the time to hold on, says Climate Minister Lars Aagaard (M) in a press release.

Political agreements have indeed been made on the path to achieving the climate targets, but the climate cannot feel this until they have been implemented in reality.

From thought to action

In the climate program, the ministry emphasizes the importance of the many climate plans also translating into concrete transitions.

- In order for an adopted instrument to have a real effect, it requires full and timely implementation and execution of the instrument, the climate program points out.

Minister Lars Aagaard acknowledges that the major focus is now on ensuring that the ongoing climate policy agreements since the climate election in 2019 are also implemented.

- We have major agreements that need to be implemented, and we must ensure a framework that makes it as easy as possible for both citizens and companies to take part in the transition and bring us over the finish line, he says in the press release.

The Danish Parliament has adopted a number of climate agreements that have not yet delivered CO2 reductions in reality.

This applies, for example, to the plans for CO2 capture and storage, which are still in their development phase. phase, but which is only expected to deliver reductions in the coming years.

The same applies to the large-scale Green Tripartite for agriculture, which will also only deliver CO2 reductions in a number of years.
