The insurance industry wants to have climate-threatened homes removed

If we do nothing about vulnerable housing, we risk homes that in practice cannot be insured. This is what the trade association says.

Homes that are repeatedly hit by extreme weather such as storm surges, cloudbursts and rising groundwater should be relocated or demolished. And this should be done with subsidies from the state, the industry organization Forsikring & Pension suggests in a press release.

The organization proposes that 600 million kroner be allocated per year until 2030 for either relocation or demolition of vulnerable homes. If nothing is done, according to director Kent Damsgaard, there will be homes in the near future that cannot be insured.

- We need to act quickly, because climate change and the damage that follows in its wake will not wait, says Kent Damsgaard, who elaborates:

- Otherwise, we risk that in the near future there will be properties that are so expensive to insure that they cannot be insured in practice, he says in the announcement.

According to the proposal, homeowners in areas where it is not possible to climate-proof their houses, and who have repeatedly had climate-related damage, will be able to receive up to half a million kroner in subsidies to move their houses. Either to another place on the plot or to a completely different plot.

The second proposal is a demolition fund, which is targeted at properties that have been exposed to repeated climate-related damage and where climate protection is not possible. Overall, the proposal will make it possible to demolish or move 1,950 houses per year - or a total of 9,750 by 2030. The background to the proposal, according to Kent Damsgaard, is that more and more homes are exposed to the consequences of extreme weather. And that will not decrease in the future, he believes.

- We believe it is absolutely necessary for us to start the difficult conversation: Should all properties be preserved? And can all parts of Denmark be built on? And if not, how do we help those citizens who are in a difficult situation with a worthless property?, he says in the press release.

Jyllands-Posten has presented the proposal to Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke (S). He informs the media that the government has no current plans to allocate money to move or demolish properties in flood-prone areas.
