NHV Group and wind turbine manufacturer Vestas have entered into a collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from helicopter operations. From April, NHV's flights from Esbjerg Airport will use sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to the extent possible. NHV writes in a press release.
As part of a multi-year agreement, NHV will carry out dedicated crew changes for Vestas' offshore wind turbine activities in the North Sea. The agreement marks the first time that a super-medium helicopter of the Airbus H175 type is used for offshore wind projects in the area. The flights will be based in Esbjerg and go to the offshore wind farm He Dreiht.
The initiative also introduces the use of SAF at Esbjerg Airport. The fuel is supplied by DCC & Shell Aviation DK and will be used in a 40 percent blend. The SAF is made from biological waste, including used frying oil.
SAF is considered a significant factor in efforts to reduce aviation's climate impact, as it can reduce CO2 emissions over the entire life cycle of the fuel. As offshore wind farms are located further from the coast, air transport is becoming increasingly important for efficient and safe passenger transport at sea.
– We are proud to support Vestas with helicopter flights using SAF. Together with our modern fleet and broader sustainability initiatives, this shows our determination to develop our international business in a more sustainable way, says Lars-Henrik Thorngreen, CEO of NHV Group.
Vestas also highlights the collaboration with NHV as a step in the green direction.
– Integrating sustainability into all parts of our operations is a high ambition for Vestas. We are now expanding the use of SAF in our offshore activities and are pleased with the close collaboration with NHV and the strong commitment from everyone involved, says Lisa Ekstrand, Vice President and Head of Sustainability at Vestas.
