The office in the Danish Energy Agency, which has been working specifically on the project with an energy island in the North Sea for a number of years, has been closed. This is shown by an internal email in the Danish Energy Agency, which Zetland has in its possession. According to the media, the director of the agency explains in the email from August 9 that alternative solutions for the energy island must be looked for.

"This means that the Center For Energiø Nordsøen (EØN) will no longer be able to perform its tasks, which is why the center must be closed down and the employees in EØN reassigned," the email states.

Zetland has spoken to a number of former employees in the department. They confirm that the center "has actually been under closure for a long time." The center had around 45 employees in total.

At the end of June, the tender for the energy island, which is estimated to cost up to 210 billion kroner, was postponed. This was because the economy was not coherent.

"The Danish Energy Agency estimates that the state costs for the current project are over 50 billion kroner in total," the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities wrote in a press release.

"The project is thus far from being profitable, which is a clear condition for the project in the political agreements."

"Not dropped"

But even though the office that worked on the energy island has now closed, the ministry continues to tell Zetland that "the energy island has not been dropped".

At Christiansborg, parties from both wings criticize that the agreement group has not been informed about the closure of the Center for Energy Island North Sea.

The idea of energy islands stems from a political climate agreement. Energy islands are a hub for collecting and distributing electricity supplied from offshore wind turbines, which are located far from land.

The energy island in the North Sea will be located 80-100 kilometers from the west coast of Jutland. It has also been politically decided that an energy island will be built on Bornholm.
