A coordinated European response is needed to the latest announcement from US President Donald Trump, according to Dansk Erhverv.
Trump will impose tariffs on goods from countries that do not support the Americans' desire to acquire Greenland. Such an action requires an appropriate response, says Dansk Erhverv's CEO, Brian Mikkelsen.
- Trump's farce continues. The US president is once again using tariffs as a threat. It is harmful to confidence in world trade and harmful to the American and European economy, says Mikkelsen in a comment on Trump's statement.
He also calls for action from the US Congress and calls it "unreal" that the discussion about Greenland's future has reached this point.
- The most important thing is continued European unity, so that Trump does not succeed in playing the European countries against each other, says the director.
On Saturday evening Danish time, Donald Trump wrote on his social media, Truth Social, that from February 1st he will impose an additional tariff of 10 percent on goods from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
This is because these countries have sent soldiers to Greenland in recent days, after Trump has reiterated his desire to annex the country.
If an agreement is not reached that makes Greenland a US territory by July 1st, the additional tariff will, according to Trump, be raised to 25 percent.
DE: Special duty is probably illegal
Danish Business Association assesses that it is probably not legal to impose special duties on Danish goods. But if so, it will be up to a court to reverse it, and it may take a long time. Therefore, Danish companies with exports to the US could be affected by the higher duties at least temporarily.
- Immediately, it is a worsening of the competitive situation on the American market. But before it can take hold among Danish companies, this must persist over time.
- It is likely that Trump's punitive duty of the extra ten percent will be challenged very quickly by American companies that import - or by Congress, is the assessment of Michael Bremerskov Jensen, head of global market development at Danish Business Association.
