Wood pellets, biogas and other energy products based on biomass are increasingly used in households, at Danish power plants and in companies.
In 2024, Denmark used 200 PJ of energy from biomass, an increase of 14 percent since 2019.
- Our consumption of biomass has increased last year, and it is now at the second highest level ever. It has only been surpassed by the level in 2021, when there was a relatively cold winter with a greater heating need, says Thomas Eisler, special consultant at Statistics Denmark.
He explains that it is especially our consumption of wood pellets, forest chips and biogas that has increased, and that the increased consumption of wood pellets comes from imports, while biogas is produced in Denmark.
Half of Denmark's energy consumption comes from renewable energy
Renewable energy accounted for 48.4 percent of total energy consumption in Denmark in 2024.
Biomass accounted for the majority of renewable energy with 64 percent in 2024 compared to 87 percent in 1995.
The remaining part came from solar, wind, water, geothermal and heat pumps.
In the period 1995-2024, among other things Wind turbines contributed to the increase in the consumption of renewable energy with an increase of 70 PJ. Looking at all forms of biomass as a whole, there has been an increase of 150 PJ in consumption during the same period.
