The power plant in Hamburg-Moorburg was put into operation in 2015 and cost around three billion euros (approx. DKK 22.4 billion) to build. However, it was closed again in 2021, as the high CO2 emissions made it unprofitable to produce electricity. Before the closure, the plant emitted around nine million tonnes of CO2 annually. Since the end of 2023, demolition has been underway to make way for a new PtX plant that will produce green hydrogen. This is what the German Spiegel writes.
Only one of two planned boilers was demolished when the demolition of the former coal-fired power plant in Hamburg-Moorburg was carried out. The demolition, which was supposed to pave the way for a new PtX plant, did not go as planned.
The first boiler fell as expected, but the second remained standing. - The reason why the second, identical boiler did not collapse is still being investigated, according to Hamburger Energiewerke, which is responsible for the demolition. The area around the power plant had been cordoned off for safety reasons in a radius of 300 to 500 meters.
In the days leading up to the explosion, around 1,850 holes were drilled in the reinforced concrete supports under the boilers. - Approximately 600 kilograms of explosives were used per boiler, the energy company said. In addition, 30 pools with two cubic meters of water each were placed near the buildings, which was supposed to minimize the spread of dust by means of a water wall.
