Ukraine's military reported on Tuesday an attack on an oil refinery and a chemical plant deep in Russia. The General Staff, the supreme command of the Ukrainian military, wrote on the messaging service Telegram that the military had carried out an attack on a refinery belonging to the oil company Lukoil in the town of Kstovo in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Kstovo is located about 450 kilometers east of the Russian capital, Moscow.

The General Staff claims that the refinery supplies oil to the Russian military. The extent of the damage is being assessed, it added.

Russia has not commented on the attack, but the governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, Gleb Nikitin, says that the Russian air defense has repelled an attack carried out by 20 drones near Kstovo.

The supreme command of the Ukrainian military also reported a Ukrainian drone attack on a chemical plant in central Russia. The attack on the factory, located in the republic of Bashkortostan, has caused significant damage, according to the General Staff of the Ukrainian military.

Regional authorities in Bashkortostan confirm that Ukrainian drones have damaged a factory in the city of Sterlitamak, but that the facility is still in operation. Sterlitamak is located about 1,400 kilometers east of Moscow.

For several months, Ukraine has been targeting oil refineries and depots in Russia, among other places.

Russia's oil production has recently received a lot of attention from US President Donald Trump, who believes that the export of Russian oil helps finance the war in Ukraine.

At the end of August, Trump doubled the US import duty on Indian goods from 25 to 50 percent, citing Indian purchases of Russian oil. Trump has also called on other countries to impose sanctions on countries that buy oil and gas from Russia.

In October, the US Treasury Department announced that it had imposed sanctions on Lukoil and also Rosneft, another Russian energy company.
