For the second month in a row: June also breaks record in negative electricity prices

A total of 182 hours with negative electricity prices in June – a new Danish record, figures from Norlys show.

Danish electricity consumers have experienced a record number of hours with negative electricity prices in June. In total, the electricity price has been below zero for 182 hours – the highest number ever measured in one month. This is according to Norlys.

The negative prices were distributed with 116 hours in Western Denmark and 66 in Eastern Denmark. This means that June surpasses the previous record from May, when 176 hours with negative electricity prices were recorded.

- Danish consumers have really been able to enjoy the Danish summer weather in June. If they have followed their electricity price apps and planned their electricity consumption according to the cheapest hours, then there has really been money to save this month – for example for charging the electric car, says Mads Brøgger, director of Norlys' energy business.

With an increasing amount of renewable energy in the electricity system and favorable weather conditions with both sun and wind, 2025 looks set to be a record year. The number of hours with negative prices has already reached 536 – only 114 hours from the entire 2024 record of 650.

- Fortunately, we are getting more and more renewable energy in our energy system, and this means that the weather is becoming more important for the price of electricity. Recently, when we have had lots of sun and actually a lot of wind, this is reflected in the electricity prices to the benefit of consumers. At the same time, it has not been so hot that the electricity consumption for cooling homes has increased the demand for electricity enough to push prices up, says Mads Brøgger.

In addition to the pure electricity price, there is the state electricity tax, electricity tariff for the state-owned Energinet, subscriptions, spot surcharges, VAT and network tariff for the local electricity grid company. Tariffs can also fluctuate from hour to hour depending on which tariff model the individual electricity grid companies use.
