Faxe wants to use excavated material from shipping channels for coastal protection

FAXE: In connection with a consultation on the company Faxe Kalk's wish to dump a total of 35,000 m3 of excavated material from the shipping channel at Faxe Ladeplads Harbour over five years at an existing dumping site in Faxe Bugt, Faxe City Council has pointed to another solution in its consultation response.

In its comment to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, the city council refers to the fact that it is investigating whether the material can instead be used for coastal protection measures such as dikes, sand feeding or for construction and filling on land or in the maritime territory. This is evident from the minute from the latest city council meeting.

This is seabed material consisting of decomposed algae and seagrass. Samples from here show that the content of environmentally harmful substances is generally low, however, a slightly elevated content of cadmium is found in one area, and there is a lot of nitrogen in the material.

A vote against

In the previous discussion in the Technical and Environmental Committee in May, a majority had decided to recommend to the Environmental Protection Agency that dumping (knocking) be prohibited, while one member, Lisette Lind Larsen (S), found the presentation of the case so inadequate that she wanted to bring the case to the Danish National Appeals Board. She also wanted the case to be referred to the city council.

During the discussion by the city council, Lisette Lind Larsen was the only city council member to vote again against the recommendation from the committee, which was approved with 24 votes in favor. In her minority opinion, it is reiterated that she finds the case presentation inadequately informed, that test results are missing, that the case has been brought before the Danish National Appeals Board, "and that, based on the case insight, legality in the application and consultation process is being examined."

According to the case presentation, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency's position is that the organic material should be dumped due to the slightly elevated cadmium content and to avoid oxygen depletion near the coast. However, consultants point out that the material decomposes slowly, that the risk of oxygen depletion is low, and that the small amounts are unlikely to harm the environment. Therefore, the municipality's administration believes that it should be investigated further whether the material can be moved to the coast.

The Danish Environmental Protection Agency has also asked the Danish Environmental Protection Agency for comments on the application for permission to dump clean-up material from the entrance to Faxe Ladeplads Harbour.
