Electricity consumption in Denmark in the first quarter of 2024 took a significant jump upwards with an increase of over eight percent compared to consumption in the first quarter of 2023. The starting point in 2023 was characterized by very high electricity prices, which may have lowered consumption, but also seen in a longer perspective, electricity consumption in the first quarter of 2024 was unusually high in Denmark - in fact the highest ever. This is shown by the Danish Energy Agency's quarterly statistics on energy consumption in Denmark.
"The background to the sharp increase in electricity consumption will only be fully revealed in connection with the publication of the final energy statistics for 2024, but it is likely that more electrically powered heat pumps have replaced oil and gas boilers and that the number of electric cars has grown," reads a press release from the agency.
Denmark's total actual energy consumption increased by 1.4 percent or 2.6 PJ when comparing the first quarter of 2024 with the first quarter of 2023.
The increase is caused by an increase in the consumption of renewable energy and natural gas of nine and 11 percent respectively compared to the same period last year. The increase in natural gas consumption must, however, be seen in light of the low gas consumption in the same period the previous year due to the energy crisis.
But there is an increase in gas and renewable energy, there is a large decrease in the consumption of coal of 38 percent, and oil consumption has also decreased by almost four percent. primarily driven by lower consumption of gasoline and diesel.
Viking Link led to more electricity exports
Denmark usually has net exports of electricity in the first quarter of the year, and this was also the case in 2024. Electricity exports in the first quarter of 2024 were relatively modest, and net exchange was slightly lower than in 2023.
Despite this, overall electricity exchange was significantly higher in the first quarter of 2024 than the previous year, with growth in both exports and imports of around 25 percent.
This is a development that was promoted by the new cable connection between Jutland and England, Viking Link, which was opened at the end of 2023 and gave rise to a significant export of electricity from Denmark to England in the first quarter of 2024.
